| | The Palermo Union School District Title VII Indian Education Program is a program designed for Indian students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Instructional assistants are available to assist students who require help in reading or math in grades 2 through 8. Indian students who are enrolled in the Palermo Union School District Indian Education program are provided with the opportunity to increase their knowledge of the culture and history of the Native American. In order to participate or to receive the services available through Title VII Indian Education program, students must have a correctly completed Indian Student Certification (ED 506) form on file with the District. | |

| | Examples of services/activities that the Palermo Union School District Indian Education Program provides during the school year include: Academic Tutoring in the classroom or limited pullout to the Indian Education room. Tutoring time is divided between those classes with the greatest number of students needing academic help in grades 2 through 8. Cultural Awareness through participation on fieldtrips, cultural presentations in the classroom or assemblies, and a variety of hands on Native American arts/crafts, books, computers filmstrips, foods, games, legends, plays, and puppetry. Substance Abuse Awareness group sessions are offered to 6-8th grade students on a volunteer basis by a Behavioral Health professional. Community Collaboration with the Native American community, guest presenters, special events (e.g., Pow Wows, Honor Gathering) and community wide activities (e.g., Salmon Festival). | |

| | The Palermo Indian Parent Committee (PIPC) meets once a month to recommend academic needs and cultural activities for Indian students, training for project staff and parent officers, and educational materials to support the academic and cultural needs of Indian students. This committee is composed of parents, grandparents, foster parents, and project staff.
